PRESS RELEASE

The Minister  of Communication hereby informs the national and international public opinion that after the recent successful operations carried out at Ngoshe in Nigeria, the Special Units of the Cameroonian Defence Forces pursued, under the banner of Sector 1 of the Multinational Joint Task Force, backed by Special Units of the Alpha and Emergence 4 Operations, and in perfect synergy with Nigerian Armed Forces, their action to dismantle the strongholds of the Boko Haram terrorist group in the locality of Kumshe in Nigeria, situated about 15 kilometers away from our borders, as well as in the surrounding villages.

This major offensive took place from February 23 to 24, 2016.

The attack led against the Kumshe locality has confirmed that it was one of the main logistics bases and an important decision-making centre for the criminal actions plotted and launched by the Boko Haram terrorists towards the Cameroonian territory.

The cordon-and-search operations conducted in the area revealed the existence in those communities and their surroundings, of facilities for the making of artisanal mines, explosive belts, the moral preparation and arming of suicide bombers and the training of terrorists.

The balance sheet of this remarkable offensive by the coalition of Forces is as follows, to the detriment of the enemy:

–     92 Boko Haram terrorists neutralized;

–  Explosives, detonators, detonating cords, suicide bomber-jackets and other products used to actuate the explosives;

–  Training camps and a tactical vehicle mounted with a heavy weapon destroyed;

–    several weapons recovered, including a 12.7 millimeter machine gun, AK-47-type assault rifles, a 60 mm commando mortar, grenades, hunting and trafficking weapons;

–  Tens of charger boxes and thousands of ammunition of various calibers recovered;

–     Tens of bows, spears, arrows, axes and knives seized;

–     Various propaganda materials seized.

850 villagers previously made prisoners by Boko Haram were also released on the occasion.

Following the accidental explosion of a mine during the de-mining operations, Sergeant Aziz NNANG and Caporal Moussa SAÏDOU died, while five over men were injured.

On behalf of the entire Nation, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul Biya, Commander-in-Chief of the Army, hereby expresses his sincere condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers, and extends his comfort to the injured to whom he also wishes a speedy recovery.

The President of the Republic, His Excellency Paul BIYA, Commander-in-Chief of the Army, hereby expresses to the Defence and Security Forces, the satisfaction and encouragements of the entire Nation, in the victorious struggle they are leading, together with all other armies of the Coalition, against the Boko Haram terrorist sect.

He calls on all Cameroonians to remain mobilized and continue to give their support to our Defence and Security Forces in this struggle.
