AFCON2021: Olembe stadium stampede claims 8 lives

During the Cameroon vs Comoros match at the Olembe stadium, counting for the round of 16 at the ongoing AFCON 2021, 8 people lost their lives during a stampede that occurred at the stadium. The incident occurred as fans scrambled to access the stadium, they pressed for stewards to open gates which had been closed to watch the Indomitable Lions seek an African Cup quarterfinals ticket, which they obtained after winning debutants Comoros by 2-1.

According to a communique signed by Rene Emmanuel Sadi, Minister of Communication and government spokesperson states that initial findings indicate 8 deaths and 38 wounded, with 7 seriously injured. The deceased were taken to the Yaounde Emergency Center for proper formalities while the injured were spread across four health facilities, where they have been taken charge of, on instructions of the Head of State.

The Head of State further expressed his profound condolence to the bereaved families and wished quick recovery to the wounded, to whom he extends the sympathy of the entire nation.

While, congratulating the enthusiasm manifested by the population since the start of the completion on Cameroonian soil, the Minister of Communication on behalf of the government exhorted the population to be responsible, disciplined and civic to ensure the success of this big sportive event. In the same light, the government has reassured that all necessary measures have been taken to ensure a hitch free event, meanwhile an investigation has been opened to get more insight on this tragic incident.
