MINCOM defends FCFA 5, 841 million as 2024 draft budget

The draft budget of the Ministry of Communication for the 2024 financial year stands at FCFA 5 841 million. These figures were presented and defended by the Minister of Communication, Rene Emmanuel SADI to the Finance and Budget Committee of the National Assembly on Monday, December 04, 2023 in Yaounde. Before presentation for scrutiny, Minister SADI gave a balance sheet of the 2023 budget whose execution rate stood at 90%, excluding expenditures directly managed by the Ministry of Finance such as salaries, water, electricity and telephone.

Some of the activities enlisted includes the ongoing government communication activities, granting of institutional support to privately owned media, CRTV media coverage of all sovereign activities involving the Head of State, rehabilitation programs for central and devolved services of the Ministry of Communication, and the finalisation of the pilot phase of the project to set up the Virtual Information Agency.

The 2024 budget which witnessed an increase of over FCFA 1 billion has the following as major prospects: commissioning the Virtual Information Agency; restart of the CRTV technical rehabilitation project; the continuation of the program to improve the working conditions in the central and devolved services of the ministry; the implementation of government’s policies to combat hate speech; citizen education through the media; creation of a digital platform to promote government action; the acquisition of broadcasting rights for international sporting events, particularly the 2023 AFCON Total Energies and the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers; the acceleration of the digital transformation of the media and CRTV and the strengthening of the mission to preserve the national audio-visual heritage.
