MINCOM, new EU Ambassador commit to reinforce existing ties

The two officials took a commitment to foster  existing cooperation ties between the Ministry of Communication and the European Union.

The Minister of Communication and Government Spokesperson, Rene Emmanuel Sadi received in an audience the new Ambassador, Head of the European Union Delegation of Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, Mr. Jean Marc CHÂTAIGNER who was designated to his new function on September 1, 2023. The diplomat came to benefit from the experience of MINCOM as a diplomat and minister of the Republic of Cameroon

The discussions between the Minister of Communication and the new EU boss to Cameroon centred on exploring avenues to intensify the existing ties between the EU and MINCOM , particularly in the fight against hate speech and fake news, a phenomenon which is gaining steam especially on social media. In the same light they explored avenues to build the capacity of journalists in the private press. It was noted that journalists in Cameroon lack the necessary training to embrace the new challenges that have come up in the profession. H.E Jean Marc CHÂTAIGNER said his structure is ready to provide the necessary technical and financial support to this effect.

Lastly, the two officials sought avenues to render the private press more economically viable. It should be noted the government of Cameroon has been making efforts in this light by providing financial assistance to private print media. In the days ahead a special fund will be launched for the audio-visual media in Cameroon. However, much still needs to be done to render the press economically independent  Thus, the  EU is committed to bringing its contribution to improving the standards of the private media.

The EU representative revealed that the Ministry of Communication was the first he was visiting after presenting his letter of credence to the Minister of External Relations. The audience ended with a recap of the political situation in some African countries marred by coup d’états and other security challenges. The diplomat saluted the efforts of H.E Paul Biya in maintaining stability and described Cameroon as an island of stability.
